What is PAD?

PAD, Peripheral Artery Disease is a medical condition that affects around 12 million Americans over the age of 50. PAD happens when there is plaque build up in the walls of your arteries. Your arteries supply oxygenated blood to your extremities. When there is plaque build up (fat and cholesterol) in the walls of your arteries the oxygenated blood has a hard time getting to the lower legs and feet. This results in leg spasms, bluish skin color, cooler temperature in one leg than the other, pain when doing an activity that stops when at rest. When PAD goes untreated a person can experience wounds that won’t heal and possible amputation of the toes and lower leg.

Risk Factors for PAD

- Diabetes

- Smoking

- Hypertension

- Over Age 50

- High Cholesterol

- Chronic Kidney Disease
